Behind the Oflags wires. A sociological study

The publication of Professor Anna Matuchniak-Krasuski, sociology professor at the Department of Sociology of Art at the University of Lodz, is an interesting study of the history and sociology, devoted to the life of Polish officers in the Wehrmacht camp during World War II. The author looks into the life in Oflags, focusing her attention on the mechanisms governing of POWs’ communities and different methods of adaptation to the conditions in the camps. It also draws attention to the ways of surviving in the captivity: work of camp theaters, flourishing artistic creativity and sport. The book is written in an interesting and simple language for easy understanding of the sociological complexities. Numerous illustrations brings the content closer to the reader. The publication is even more valuable as it is the first scholarsociology study of prisoners-of-war topic in the Polish literature. So far this problem - as stated by the author –has been signaled only one of the historiographers of camp life, Marek Sadzewicz, who was a prisoner of war during World War II, and later became the author of an excellent publication of memoirs called "Oflag". Thus, the book of A. Matuchniak-Krasusky fills a gap in Polish scientific literature and researches on memory and history. The publication was based on historical treatises, memoir books and museum collections and archives, including the author's personal archive about her grandfather - Capt. Konrad Majcherski, an officer of the 25 infantry regiment from Piotrkow Trybunalski. He was a prisoner-of-war bearing the number 613 X A in Dulagu B Lamsdorf and Oflags: Itzehoe X A, X A Sandbostel, X C Lübeck, II C Woldenberg.
